Biomarkers have been a hot topic in the drug research and development process for the last 10 years, ever since the joint NIH/FDA/pharma biomarkers meeting held in Bethesda, MD, in 1998. While biological endpoints have long been critical in the development of the pharmaceutical interventions, this more recent interest has been considered by many to be another potential "savior" of drug development. From this heightened interest, a whole new business has emerged associated with this industry.
